Parking a motorcycle in New York City is a lot easier to figure out than parking a car. However, I have 3 Motorcycle parking hacks that every New York City motorcyclist should know.
Motorcycle Parking Hack #1:
Every motorcyclist in New York City needs to get the “SmoothParking” app. Just search your current location or enter the location of where you want to go and SmoothParking will show you where and when you can legally park. I always use this app before getting on my motorcycle to go somewhere. SmoothParking helps me plan my parking ahead of time; saving me time and money.
Motorcycle Parking Hack #2:
This next one isn’t a hack I’ve ever done myself but I see it all the time. A lot of motorcyclists in New York City velcro their license plate to their motorcycle so they can easily remove it and park on the sidewalk. The police are unable to write a ticket without seeing a license plate. This allows motorcyclists to pretty much park anywhere. However, I’ve never done this because it’s a bit too flagrant for me.
Motorcycle Parking Hack #3:
Anyone who parks in the street has to pay attention to alternate side parking rules… but not if you have a motorcycle! If you’re in a pinch and can’t move your bike for alternate side, you should NOT get a parking ticket if your motorcycle is covered. That’s right! All you need to do is cover your motorcycle (license plate must be covered) and the police are not legally allowed to uncover your bike. Since the police cannot see your license plate they are technically unable to write you a ticket. However, you should always make an honest effort to move your motorcycle for alternate side. But let’s say it’s raining or you’re out of town for a day or two then make sure your motorcycle is completely covered and the cops cannot legally uncover your bike. Now, I want to be careful as I share this hack because I don’t want anyone to get into any legal trouble. With that being said, you do not want to abuse this legal loophole because the police will take notice, get a warrant to uncover your bike and potentially tow it.
